“Afya Kids” Project in Mathare Slum, Nairobi Kenya
Intestinal parasites and a lack of vitamin A cause serious physical and developmental problems in Africa. The problem is almost non-existent in the developed world but a serious and common problem in low resource communities throughout the developing world. Medic Outpost has been working in the poor slums surrounding Nairobi, Kenya since late in 2021. Our goal is to provide treatment for intestinal worms and provide Vitamin A in the primary schools in the slum areas around Nairobi. We realize that the only way to make real change happen is to plant seeds in the minds of our young patients. To accomplish this we are teaching courses in hand washing, personal hygiene, and we teach a very unique first aid course to older primary school children and to their teachers. In the poor areas throughout the world, young girls are the primary caregivers for the younger siblings. These young caregivers are the ones that need to know what to do when an emergency happens. Our courses have been designed to be appropriate for their age group and we deliver it in a hands on skills based model. Each school receives training for their staff and a complete first aid kit. To date we have treated and. trained over 10,000 children. Many thanks to our partner Vitamin Angels for help with providing the needed medications. If you would like more information about our work or would like to help support this effort then please email info@medicoutpost.org.
Medic Outpost Africa will be developing a program to assist primary school staff and supporters with fighting child physical and sexual abuse in poor communities.
