San Antonio de Los Altos, Chiapas, Mexico
This small village in the midst of a temperate rainforest was the site of a Medic Outpost midwife training course. Señor Don Arturo hosted Medic Outpost at the small clinic he runs out of his home. The training session saw six midwives travel to attend -- two of whom traveled over four hours, on foot, to get to the training!
These midwives have delivered quite a few babies and all were very focused and interested in the course. Medic Outpost trained them in neonatal resuscitation techniques, including initial stimulation of a newborn and use of a bag-valve mask. Before training, if the midwife didn't detect a strong umbilical pulse at birth, the baby's prognosis was grim. With the training they received, they are able to initiate a resuscitation sequence to increase the likelihood of a positive outcome for the baby. Medic Outpost provided the education AND the equipment to save the lives of babies they'll deliver.
Each received a resuscitation kid consisting of a neonatal bag-valve mask, OB kit, neonatal airways, PPE and extra gloves, heat blankets, and scalpels and cord clamps. Sr. Alturo is pictured above during this training.
